SUMMARY:SSNS Seminar – Dr Carly McNamara – Lismore’s Monastery in Early Medieval Scotland
DESCRIPTION:The SSNS Seminar Series continues on Thursday 27 February 2025 with a talk by Dr Carly McNamara (University of Glasgow), titled ‘Lismore’s Monastery in Early Medieval Scotland’. This is a free, ticketed event; please register below.\nAbstract:\nThis talk turns the spotlight on the monastery of Lismore, from its foundation in the sixth century through its designation as the seat of the Bishopric of Argyll upon its creation in the twelfth century, and a bit beyond. Discussion will touch on its founder’s origins in Ireland and his connection with Rosemarkie. Lismore’s place in religious and secular society throughout this period and geography will also be touched upon. An interdisciplinary approach is undertaken to give the clearest picture possible of this important monastery’s status and history.\nBio:\nDr Carolyn McNamara completed her PhD in Celtic at the University of Glasgow in 2021. Since then she has worked as a Research Assistant on the Oyster Habitat Suitability Project, an interdisciplinary project at the University of Glasgow. She is also in the process of completing her first book, which looks at early medieval monasteries in the west of Scotland.\n\nRegistration below. Details for the Zoom meeting will be emailed in advance of the seminar.\n
