SUMMARY:SSNS Seminar – Prof David Griffiths – Vikings of the Irish Sea, revisited
DESCRIPTION:The SSNS Seminar Series continues on Thursday 10 April 2025 with a talk by Prof David Griffiths, titled ‘Vikings of the Irish Sea, revisited‘. This is a free, ticketed event; please register below.\nAbstract:\n\nThe Irish Sea was a zone of intense Viking activity between the 8th and 11th centuries AD, with conflict often overlapping between its landmasses. How can this story be told without resorting to familiar national/ territorial narratives? Who were the Irish Sea Vikings, how did they integrate into the region, and what happened to their legacy? In particular we will take a fresh look at Scotland and its wider Irish Sea connections.\nJoin us on the 10th of April to hear from David Griffiths, coincident with the 2025 publication of a new edition of his “Vikings of the Irish Sea. ( https://thehistorypress.co.uk/publication/vikings-of-the-irish-sea/ )” This book examines in detail the activities of the Vikings in Wales, North West England, the Isle of Man, Scotland and Ireland.\n\nBio:\nDavid is a Professor at the University of Oxford, he trained in the UK and Scandinavia, and has completed field and research projects on parts of the Irish Sea region, Orkney, and Oxfordshire. He has been working on Scottish archaeological themes since the mid-1980s and has published works on coastal archaeology, medieval settlement, and also gave the 2013 Whithorn Lecture. He is a Visiting Professor at UHI Northern Studies, and was formerly a Visiting Fellow at the University of Glasgow, and external examiner at the University of Aberdeen. He is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland.\n\nRegistration below. Details for the Zoom meeting will be emailed in advance of the seminar.\n
