DESCRIPTION:The SSNS Seminar Series continues on 16 June with a talk by Dr Susan Marshall, titled ‘”One Lord Rather than Many”: Bastardy and Succession in Medieval Galloway ‘.\nThis is a free, ticketed event; please register below.\nAbstract:\nAs is well-known, the medieval lordship of Galloway in south-west Scotland had close links with the Irish sea world, in which diverse traditions concerning inheritance and succession flourished.  The death in 1234 of Alan, Anglo-Norman lord of Galloway, leaving legitimate daughters and an illegitimate son, sparked a succession crisis in the lordship at a time when the Church and the Scottish crown alike were confronting the practice of illegitimate inheritance. This talk examines the legal context of the Galloway succession dispute and its place in medieval Scottish attitudes to illegitimacy.\nBio:\nDr Susan Marshall has worked as a Teaching Fellow in Celtic and Anglo-Saxon Studies at the University of Aberdeen. Her monograph, Illegitimacy in Medieval Scotland ( https://boydellandbrewer.com/9781783275885/illegitimacy-in-medieval-scotland-1100-1500/ ), 1100-1500, was published with Boydell & Brewer in 2021.\nRegistration below.
