SUMMARY:Seminar – Dr Lynda McGuigan – ‘The Antiquarian Letter Archive of James Carnegie, 9th Earl of Southesk: A Case Study’
DESCRIPTION:The SSNS Seminar Series continues on 14 July with a talk by Dr Lynda McGuigan (Fraserburgh Lighthouse Museum), titled ‘The Antiquarian Letter Archive of James Carnegie, 9th Earl of Southesk: A Case Study‘.\nThis is a free, ticketed event; please register below.\nAbstract:\nJames Carnegie, 9th Earl of Southesk (16 November 1827–21 February 1905) was a Scottish nobleman, antiquarian, explorer and poet. He had a particular interest in Pictish symbol stones and ogham inscriptions and he corresponded with the main authorities on these subjects of his day. This was a key moment in the history of Pictish Studies which began in earnest during the nineteenth century. The talk presents new and unpublished information on the Pictish symbol stones of Aberdeenshire based on Southesk’s correspondence which I discovered over the course of my doctoral studies.\nRegistration below. Details for the Zoom meeting will be emailed in advance of the seminar.\n\nJames Carnegie, 9th Earl of Southesk, by Richard James Lane – © National Portrait Gallery, London\n
