This volume honours the work of Dr Anna Ritchie, esteemed archaeologist, author, and lifelong advocate of Scotland's premodern history and heritage.

Anna's extensive and enduring contributions to the field of archaeology, particularly on the topic of prehistoric and early medieval Scotland, were celebrated at the Common Ground conference, jointly hosted by the Scottish Society for Northern Studies and the Pictish Arts Society in 2022. Several of the essays presented in this volume stem from this event.

Scandinavia can be seen through many lenses and from many different angles, but few are as diverse as those of Dr Bjarne Thorup Thomsen. On the occasion of his retirement from the University of Edinburgh, this volume honours his body of work, bringing together 24 contributions from Bjarne’s friends and colleagues that explore everything from early Christianity in Scandinavia to the contemporary currents that bind Scotland and Scandinavia together via many points in between. These many refractions of Scandinavia exhibit both the quality of Bjarne’s interdisciplinary research and his generosity of spirit.

This festschrift honours the achievements of Dr Arne Kruse, who retired from the University of Edinburgh after an accomplished scholarly career of over four decades as a researcher and educator. In celebrating his academic body of work, this volume brings together fifteen contributions from Arne's colleagues and friends, investigating and interweaving various aspects of the history, historical linguistics, toponymy, and literature of Scotland, Scandinavia, and beyond. Wide-ranging in their geographical, chronological, and interdisciplinary scope, these collective contributions are a fitting tribute to the breadth, depth, and versatility of Arne's own research - covering land and sea, connecting islands of place and space.
