SSNS Seminar – The CODICUM Project with Professor Åslaug Ommundsen
The SSNS Seminar Series continues on Thursday 16th October 2025 with Professor Åslaug Ommundsen for their talk on The CODICUM Project.
This is a free, ticketed event; please register below.
Abstract:
Beginning in 2025, CODICUM is an ambitious, multi-disciplinary research project that explores the rich world of medieval manuscript fragments in Northern Europe (c. 1000-1500). These often overlooked pieces of parchment offer an unparalleled window into the literary culture, craftsmanship, and interconnected knowledge networks that shaped the region and linked it to Europe.
Through a combination of traditional manuscript studies, cutting-edge scientific analysis, and innovative digital techniques, CODICUM aims to reconstruct lost books, chart the flow of ideas, and reveal the hidden histories of this fascinating era.
Visit www.codicum.eu to find out more. The project is delivered in partnership with University of Bergen, University of Helsinki, University of Southern Denmark, University of Copenhagen, The Swedish National Archives and the Royal Danish Library.

Professor Åslaug Ommundsen works at the University of Bergen, where she researches fragments from medieval manuscripts in Latin, focusing on the development of book production in Norway. In 2024 the ERC Synergy Grant awarded funding to the CODICUM project, which will see Åslaug working alongside other researchers to apply groundbreaking biomolecular analysis of fragments from 50,000 medieval Latin book fragments written on animal skin and preserved in Nordic collections.
