This is a free, ticketed event; please register below.

THIS EVENT HAS UNFORTUNATELY BEEN CANCELLED

Abstract:

This talk will explore the rich collaborative process which led to the publication in 2021 of The Borgarthing Law and the Eidsivathing Law: the Laws of Eastern Norway (with Torgeir Landro and Bertil Nilsson) as well as some of the background and content of these medieval texts, including details which remain puzzling. Topics covered by the laws include practices related to birth, marriage, death and church organisation, as well as prohibited practices, and this talk will particularly highlight passages describing control of women’s behaviour, in contexts such as childbirth, breastfeeding, separation, rape, and witchcraft.

Dr Lisa Collinson has a background in Scandinavian Studies, focused on medieval cultural history, including literary and legal history. She works in Museums and Special Collections at the University of Aberdeen, developing research and teaching with museum, archive, manuscript and rare book materials, and is particularly interested in exploring uses of such materials which contribute to wider cultural developments.
