Seminar – Dr Danica Ramsey-Brimberg – ‘Irish Sea Connections in South-West Scotland in the Viking Age’

The SSNS Seminar Series returns on 14 April with a talk by Dr Danica Ramsey-Brimberg, titled ‘Irish Sea Connections in South-West Scotland in the Viking Age’.

This is a free, ticketed event; please register below.

Abstract:

The Viking Age was a time period in which different ideas, practices, and styles were shared and even adapted – not just directly from Scandinavia, but from other areas of the Viking Age world.  Located on the Irish Sea coast, the modern-day areas of Dumfries and Galloway embodied the complexities of the Viking Age, showcasing a mixture of influences from places such as northwest England, Wales, Ireland, and the Isle of Man. While textual references remain sparse, the physical evidence, such as Viking Age furnished graves, provides even more details regarding the links in the region.  The Irish Sea area was diverse yet closely tied together, with travel occurring over water and land even prior to the early medieval period. This lecture incorporates sources from different disciplines to highlight how graves embody the varying connections and interactions in southwest Scotland from the ninth to the eleventh centuries. Not only was it a key area within the Irish Sea area, but the larger Viking Age world as well.
